മലയാള സിനിമാസംഗീത ശാഖയില്‍ ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റററുടെ ശിഷ്യനായി എഴുപതുകളിലെത്തിയ ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ മാഷ് ആരവം, തകര, ചാമരം (മൂന്നു സിനിമകളും സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തത് ഭരതനാണ്) എന്നീ സിനിമകളുടെ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതം ഒരുക്കിയായിരുന്നു സിനിമയിലെത്തിയത്. ആദ്യമായി സംഗീത സംവിധാനം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചത് ഇണയെ തേടി എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന് വേണ്ടണ്ഢിയാണ്.
1994ല്‍ പൊന്തന്‍മാടയ്ക്കും 1995ല്‍ സുകൃതത്തിലൂടെയും പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതത്തിനുള്ള ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡ് അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ഢുതവണ നേടി. പശ്ചാത്തലസംഗീതത്തിന് ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡ് നേടുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ മലയാളിയാണ്. സംഗീതത്തിന് രണ്ഢുതവണ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡ് നേടുന്ന ഏകമലയാളിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. കൂടാതെ മൂന്നുതവണ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും (ഓര്‍മയ്ക്കായി (1982), വടക്കുനോക്കിയന്ത്രം, മഴവില്‍ക്കാവടി (1989), അങ്ങനെ ഒരു അവധിക്കാലത്ത് (1999)) രണ്ഢു തവണ പശ്ചാത്തലസംഗീതത്തിനുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും (സദയം (1992), സല്ലാപം (1996)) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു.
നാടകമേ ഉലകം, അനന്തന്‍പിള്ള അഥവാ അര്‍ജുനന്‍ പിള്ള, നവാഗതര്‍ക്ക് സ്വാഗതം, ഭാര്യമാര്‍ ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, ഖിലാഫത്ത് തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഈ വര്‍ഷം ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ സംഗീത സംവിധാനം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചു. ഇതില്‍ പലതും പുറത്തിറങ്ങാന്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്നതേയുള്ളു. 2003- ല്‍ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ പാഠം ഒന്ന് ഒരു വിലാപം എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിനു ശേഷം മൂന്നു വര്‍ഷത്തോളം സംഗീതലോകത്തു നിന്നു വിട്ടു നിന്ന ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ പിന്നീട് ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫര്‍ എന്ന മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ തിരിച്ചു വന്നു. ആ വര്‍ഷം തന്നെ സിബി മലയിലിന്റെ കിസാന്‍ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിനും സംഗീതം നല്‍കി. പിന്നീട്, ഏ.കെ.ജി, ഗുല്‍മോഹര്‍ എന്ന ചിത്രങ്ങളിലും ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ സഹകരിച്ചു.
സത്യന്‍ അന്തിക്കാടിന്റെ ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ സ്ഥിരം സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായിരുന്ന ജോണ്‍സണിന്റെ വസന്തകാലം തൊണ്ണൂറുകളായിരുന്നു. നന്മനിറഞ്ഞ ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍, മാളൂട്ടി, പാവക്കൂത്ത്, വര്‍ത്തമാനകാലം, മുപ്പത്തിരണ്ഢണ്ടാം നാള്‍, ശുഭയാത്ര, സണ്‍ഡേ സെവന്‍ പി.എം, ഡോ. പശുപതി, സാന്ദ്രം, കളിക്കളം, ഗജകേസരിയോഗം, രാജവാഴ്ച, കൗതുക വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍, ഈ കണ്ണിക്കൂടി, ചെറിയലോകവും വലിയ മനുഷ്യരും, നിയമം എന്തു ചെയ്യും. ഒരുക്കം, തലയണമന്ത്രം, പാവം പാവം രാജകുമാരന്‍, കാട്ടുകുതിര, സസ്നേഹം, മൃദുല, മുഖം, ഖലാസി തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയത്.
